Meet Mary: Your Student Union Vice President

Hi Everybody,

My name is Mary Doyle and I am your Vice President for Welfare and Accommodation for the 2019/2020 academic year. First of all, I’d like to welcome all the new students as well as all the students returning to their studies.

As Vice President I have two roles within the union. Firstly, as welfare officer I will be here as a helping hand to ensure your well being is being looked after. After studying here for four years I know that college can be some of the best times of your life however they can also be extremely difficult too.

This could be due to exams, being away from home or having to adjust to a whole new lifestyle, also for students returning to education it can be a difficult transition. Just know that if you’re having any difficulties my door is always open in the union or you can contact me anytime. I probably don’t have the answers to everything but I will make sure to get you in contact with the people who can help you with whatever issue you may be having. I will also be running campaigns throughout the year in relation to sexual health, mental health, consent and much more as a part of this role.

Secondly as accommodation officer I am here to offer support to you in regards to sourcing accommodation as well as being a mediator between landlords, tenants and housemates. I will assist you as best I can within my role to ensure your time in student accommodation runs as smoothly as possible.

A little bit about myself, I am 23 years old and I am from the outskirts of Athlone. I’ve just recently finished my studies in Social Care here in AIT and it has been a really great experience between the things I have learned as well as the amazing people I have met along the way. I first became involved with the student union by joining the Please Talk Mental Health Society in my first year of college and then becoming one of the committee members in the later years. This involvement really opened my eyes to the great work the Student Union was doing and I was eager to be a part of that even though four years ago I could have never seen myself sitting here. College gives you an amazing opportunity to discover new things about yourself as well as becoming involved in experiences that never even crossed your mind in the past. I want to help and make your experience here in AIT as great as possible so don’t ever hesitate to pop into me with any stresses or queries you may have.

I hope you all have a great year and best of luck with you studies,

Mary
