Meet John: Your Student Union Deputy President

Hello there!

My name is John Devine, I am the Deputy President for Education and Communication in AIT’s Student Union. I’m stepping into this role with great ambitions for the year ahead which I am excited to make a reality.

I look forward to seeing returning students and giving a big welcome to all new students joining us at AIT. I especially look forward to helping you get the best experience you can get during your time in college.

I am 23 years old and am from Westmeath. I studied Business for four years here in AIT. Through my time I learned a lot, not just about Business studies but about people. I met many amazing people and made friends for life. AIT has a great atmosphere, great staff and many wonderful opportunities.

Some advice for Students, involve yourself with activities in the College. This ranges from protests to charity events and of course clubs and societies. I was the chairman of the paintball club in 2016 and had one of the best days of my time in AIT with 32 other students taking part. Clubs and Societies are also a great way to meet new people!

Another tip for newcomers, remember that this is third level and you are now seen as an adult, entitled to your rights and respect. Don’t be afraid to make your voice heard, this isn’t secondary school! You’ll find that lecturers are very forthcoming and enthusiastic to aid students to the best of their ability.

One final tip; try to strike a good work and play balance from the start. Work hard, get the best result you can and then reward yourself. A night out with friends is a lot more fun if it’s been earned!

My role will have me working alongside Áine (SU President) and Mary (SU Vice) and the staff here in AITSU to represent and assist the students’ needs and interests. As implied by my title, I will be helping with issues concerning education and communication. This includes the following:

  • Issues relating to SUSI grants

  • Communication issues within the college ranging from staff to students

  • Issues relating to exams such as results, repeats and appeals

  • Course and Class issues

  • Class rep training and management

  • Academic progression

I look forward to meeting all of you during the year ahead. Please feel free to call into us with any issues and we will do our best to assist you. We are here to represent you and make sure your voice is heard! Please feel free to contact me via phone, email or social media.

I wish you the best of luck!

John Devine
